Overview: Green education, also known as the green university, is a modern approach focused on sustainable development, leveraging technological advancements to enhance the educational process with high efficiency and environmentally friendly standards.

Two Aspects of Green Education:

  • Environmental Programs: This aspect includes initiatives related to buildings, energy, afforestation, and services, which have been implemented in many countries worldwide for several years.
  • Educational Process: Involves the integration of technologies, applications, strategies, and practices that align with green education. Many countries have started adopting these practices in their educational systems.
  • Key Benefits:
    • Adoption of energy-efficient technologies.
    • Environmentally sound use of educational technologies.
    • Shift towards electronic services to reduce paper and textbook usage.
    • Activation of distance training to reduce the need for physical training centers.
  • Initial Foundations for Iraqi Universities:
    • Expand green spaces on campuses.
    • Encourage research on clean energy and environmental conservation.
    • Conduct awareness campaigns for green environment care.
    • Develop plans for treating environmentally harmful waste.
    • Integrate green education topics into university curricula.
    • Activate green university education departments.
    • Establish partnerships with relevant ministries and private sector companies.
    • Hold workshops on climate and environmental change risks.
    • Finance projects supporting green education.
  • Educational Re-engineering:
Through the previous points, education will be re-engineered to align with global scientific and economic developments, such as using smart computing systems, iPads, and virtual labs.
  • Example: Bologna Process:
The Bologna process, currently adopted in engineering and science colleges in most Iraqi universities, exemplifies this re-engineering.
  • Ministerial Statements:
    • National Green Education Conference: Iraqi officials and UNESCO representatives emphasized the importance of higher education in achieving sustainable development goals and addressing environmental challenges.
    • Achievements: Iraqi academic institutions were praised for their progress in scientific research, capacity building, and global classification platforms.
